What is a "percussion ensemble"?
A percussion ensemble is a type of music ensemble consisting exclusively of percussion instruments. Percussion ensembles are split into two sections, the front ensemble and the battery. The front ensemble includes mallet based instruments like the marimba, vibraphone, and xylophone as well as non-mallet based instruments like the piano, guitar, and assorted auxiliary instruments. The battery includes marching instruments such as snare, tenor, and bass drums, as well as cymbals. Indoor percussion ensembles compete on different tiered levels of either moving or standstill performances. The Waynesboro Indoor Percussion Ensemble (W.I.P.E.) is a standstill ensemble as of the 2018 season. The Waynesboro Indoor Percussion Ensemble competes in the Keystone Indoor Drill Association (K.I.D.A.) against school districts around south central Pennsylvania as well as school districts from Maryland and Virginia. The competitive season is from February to early April with our practices beginning in November. Our ensemble consists mostly of high school students with skill levels ranging from beginner to many years of experience.
We welcome all high school students within the Waynesboro Area High School of any skill level to join this once in a lifetime experience and be a part of our close knit family.
